And why do you worry about clothes? See
how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you
that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If
that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and
tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of
little faith? Matthew 6:28-30
It’s kind of funny to think about people in Jesus’ day worrying
about what they wore. Most images of people from that day show them wearing
something resembling a baptismal gown and sandals. Did they really stare into
their closet thinking, “Should I wear the off-white or the tan gunny sack today?”
Yet, there were obviously worries back then.
It’s funny how our worries change. When I was on staff at a
church, during this time of year I worried over recruiting new group leaders,
launching a small group study, and directing ministries. Now, my worries
gravitate toward painting my house, killing weeds, and praying about what’s
next for us. Jesus was right about the grass of the field – here today and gone
tomorrow – and He didn’t even have NaturaLawn Care of America.
Solomon was the richest man who ever lived. He had
everything at his disposal, yet Jesus says that Solomon’s attire couldn’t match
the beauty of God’s creation. It wasn’t a competition as much as a reality
check.
God cares about every detail of creation – the beauty of
wild grasses, the welfare of birds, and our peace of mind as well. If God cares
about plants that are here today and exterminated tomorrow, how much more does
He care about His children who are eternal.
When do you feel God doesn’t care about you? When things are
going well, it’s easy to rejoice in God’s love for us. When things have gone
wrong, it’s easy to doubt God’s love. But, good or bad, sunny or clouds, God
cares about us and everything in our lives.
What are you worried about today? Will this be a worry a
month from now? A year from now? Ten years from now? God cares about what
you’re worried about. Give your worries to Him and wait for His beauty to
appear in your life.
