Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go
back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to
the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:61-62
Jesus’ words seem a bit harsh here.
The man simply wanted to say “goodbye” to his family. Jesus rebuked him
harshly. Why? First, we cannot think of Jesus like we think of ourselves. If we
said something like that it might seem presumptuous or rude. But, Jesus is God.
God knows everything. Jesus knew something about this man and his family. Maybe
his family would have talked him out of following Jesus. Maybe he would see how
good things were at home and wouldn’t want to follow Jesus, who had no place to
lay his head (Matthew 8:20). Jesus had a reason and gave a principle for all of
us to follow.
Imagine trying to plow a row in the
rocky terrain of the Middle East in ancient times. This is not farming in a
large tractor with GPS navigation, satellite radio and air conditioning. This
is plowing with an animal. If the farmer wasn’t paying attention it would be
impossible to plow straight. Distraction could be dangerous. What have you got
your eye on these days? What is taking your focus off of Jesus and your mission
here on earth?
