You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was
God, he did not think of equality with God, as something to cling to. Instead,
he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave
and was born as a human being. Philippians
2:5-7
The thought of God becoming a human being is
really quite mindboggling. How does the all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present
and unchanging Creator of the Universe even fit into a human frame? It’s
certainly not something that we could ever figure out. That’s why we count on
the revelation of Scripture for an explanation.
Jesus has a unique role. He represents true
humanity and what an intimate connection with God really looks like. He also
represents perfection, which no human could achieve. But, He had to give up
some divine privileges to make this work. Jesus chose to limit Himself for our
sake. Only a perfect, divine man could provide an adequate sacrifice for our
sins. Only a human being could stand in the place of all humanity. If we make
Jesus more God than man or more man than God, the whole thing falls apart.
Enough teaching on the Kenosis for today. Here’s
the point: our attitude should be the same as His. He gave up position, power
and privilege to save us. What are we willing to give up for others? What is
God prompting you to do?
