Criticism is Not a Spiritual Gift

By Allen White

Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from His love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Philippians 2:1-2

“Every person you see is a person in need of encouragement.”  – Charles Swindoll

Every single one of us has faults. There is no exception. And, every one of us who attempts to obey God and do some good in this world has a powerful enemy. No exceptions there either. The enemy’s mission is to “kill and to steal and to destroy” (John 10:10). That’s taking a lot of heat for trying to do a little bit of good.

Paul doesn’t need to instruct us to point out the “growth areas” in another person’s life. We’re already pretty good at that. Where he has to instruct us is working toward unity and giving encouragement, fellowship and compassion. Those don’t come naturally. But, they do come super-naturally.

What would our church look like if these verses were fulfilled? We’re on the same team. We might as well act like it.
