Fighting versus Asking

By Allen White

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. James 4:1-2 (NIV)

How do you keep crabs in a basket? You don’t need a lid. You just need two crabs. One will make sure the other doesn’t get out of the basket. Sometimes you and I act like crabs.

Our human nature is prone to jealousy. We may not go to the extent of killing or fighting, but we sometimes covet and quarrel. It all has the same root: a lack of faith in God.

There is a great deal of inequity in the world. There is really no clear resolution in this life. We can easily torture ourselves by trying to figure out why godly people suffer while people who reject God prosper. There’s just no good answer other than “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous” (Matthew 5:45, NIV).

James clearly gives the solution: “You do not have, because you do not ask God.” We don’t need to fight. We just need to ask.
