Submit to one another out of reverence
for Christ. Ephesians 5:21 (NIV)
We’ve been
talking about Jesus’ humility in becoming human and in dying a cruel death on
the cross. Now, let’s get practical. How are we to show humility? Who are we to
submit to?
In
Ephesians 5, Paul directs us to submit to one another, then he offers some
practical examples: marriage, family and work. Wives are told to submit to
their husbands. Husbands are told to love their wives, just as Christ loved the
church and gave Himself up for her (Ephesians 5:22-33). Children are instructed
to obey their parents. Fathers are instructed not to exasperate their children
(Ephesians 6:1-4). Slaves (employees) are to obey their earthly masters
(employers). Masters (employers), God is not impressed with your status. The
same rules apply to both.
When you think about
Christ’s example, how well is Jesus coming through in your relationships? Do
your spouse, your children or your co-workers see a servant heart in your
attitude?
If
believers put each other first, instead of working hard to put themselves
first, that would sure untie a lot of knots in the church.
