When he appeared in
human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death
on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and
gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:8-11
Jesus taught
many opposite principles. When His disciples quarreled over position in the
Kingdom, Jesus would remind them: "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very
last, and the servant of all" (Mark 9:35, NIV). Jesus was exactly that. He
was the servant of all. As Eugene Peterson writes in The Message, “he lived a
selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death” (Philippians
2:8, MSG).
Jesus
humbled Himself, and God elevated Him to greatness. Think about how people try
to elevate themselves. Whether it’s power, prestige or pleasure, it only lasts
for a season. What is accomplished on this earth is temporary, even if it lasts
until the end of the Age. As we humble ourselves and surrender our mind, will
and emotions to the Everlasting One, we not only make a mark on history, but we
also make a mark on eternity.
